OVERVIEW

TOKYO Yamagawa Discovery

~ A Journey Through the Mysterious “Kobe-iwa” Gorge and Japan's Top 100 Waterfalls ~

[Prologue: A Premium Adventure That Starts with Nothing but the Clothes on Your Back]

Your special day begins the moment you step off the train at JR Musashi-Itsukaichi Station.

Waiting for us aren’t store counters, but high-performance e-bikes—our adventure companions—and the reliable support vehicle from “Tokyo Yamagawa DMC.”

We leave all our large luggage in the car and set off, light on our feet.

Here, there are no heavy backpacks or the hassle of searching for coin lockers.

All that remains is the clear stream of the Akigawa Gorge spreading out before us and the anticipation of the discoveries to come.

[Chapter 1: To the Only Village on the Mainland of Tokyo]

As we leave the city behind, the scenery rapidly takes on the distinct hues of the “satoyama” (traditional rural landscape). The Akigawa River flowing below grows clearer, and the roofs of the old farmhouses stand out against the greenery. Even the gentle uphill climb feels as easy as riding on flat ground thanks to the powerful assist of the e-bike.

Our first destination is Hinohara Village, the only village on the Tokyo mainland.

We enjoy lunch at “Café Seseragi” inside the village office, gazing out the window at the beautiful mountain range. We slowly acclimate ourselves to the local atmosphere.

[Chapter 2: “Bike & Hike”—Opening the Gate to the Divine]

With our energy recharged, we head for the highlight of this journey: “Kanoi Rock.” Tucked deep within a forest road off the beaten tourist path, this place is truly a hidden gem.

We dismount our bikes and set foot into the gorge.

Towering before us is a massive rock face reaching 100 meters in height.

It is said to have earned its name because its silhouette resembles a “door” to a sacred realm. As we climb the chains and ladders to walk along the rock face, the cool breeze and the roar of the water send shivers through our senses.

This is one of Tokyo’s premier power spots, where you can fully immerse yourself in the power of nature.

[Chapter 3: “Healing” and “Sweetness” Nurtured by Clear Streams]

As if to calm the excitement of our adventure, we head toward the “Hossawa Falls” area.

This is the only waterfall in Tokyo selected for the “100 Best Waterfalls in Japan.”

At the end of the woodchip walking path lies a waterfall basin filled with water so clear that it freezes over depending on the season.

And to soothe the fatigue from the hike, there are the sweet treats at “Chitoseya,” located at the entrance to the waterfall.

Tofu made with the pure water of Hinohara Village, “Unohana Donuts” made from the okara (tofu pulp), and rich “Soy Milk Soft Serve” offer a gentle comfort that permeates your body.

[Epilogue: Downhill Riding Like the Wind]

The return trip is a long downhill ride to Musashi-Itsukaichi Station.

Just as we climbed on the way there, gravity carries us on the way back.

The exhilaration of stopping pedaling and simply cutting through the wind as we descend the hill is a privilege reserved for cyclists.

Once we arrive at the station, the support car waiting for us collects the e-bikes.

There’s absolutely no hassle with return procedures or transportation.

We pick up our stored luggage and board the train home, feeling pleasantly tired.

This journey, where the nature of “Tokyo’s mountain side” blends with cutting-edge tourism, is sure to vividly transform your view of Tokyo.

Embark on an adventure to discover hidden mysteries in the “Tokyo Mountains”—just an hour from the city center.

Experience a comfortable and luxurious discovery ride made possible by high-performance e-bikes and a support vehicle.

Your destinations include the massive rock power spot “Kobe-iwa” and “Harazawa Falls,” one of Japan’s Top 100 Waterfalls. Enjoy a “bike & hike” through the gorge and savor the local cuisine of Hinohara Village as you deeply experience the breath of nature with all five senses.

A special day where you can leave your daily routine behind begins here.

DETAILS

[Akigawa Gorge: Hinohara Village Kobe-iwa Cycling Tour – Important Notes, Clothing, and What to Bring]

1. Clothing This tour uses electric-assist bicycles (E-bikes) to ride approximately 15 to 18 km round-trip through the peaceful villages and rural hillsides along the Akigawa River.

Since you will be exposed to the wind while cycling, layering is essential to help regulate your body temperature.

Summer (June–September): Please wear clothing made of moisture-wicking, quick-drying materials.

Since you will sweat while cycling, we recommend bringing a change of clothes.

Winter (December–March): As the wind while riding can cause you to get cold easily, adequate cold-weather gear—such as a windproof jacket, fleece, and gloves—is essential.

Footwear (Important): Please wear athletic shoes suitable for cycling.

At the turnaround point, “Kobe-iwa,” you will dismount your bike and walk through a valley flanked by massive rock walls. Since there are sections with ladders and narrow footing, shoes that are easy to walk in and provide good traction are recommended.

2. Packing List

Backpack (one that leaves both hands free while riding), drinks, rain gear (separate-piece rainwear), cold-weather gear (gloves, etc.), cash (needed for souvenirs and personal expenses), and other items (hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, portable charger).

3. Costs

Included in the tour price:

Guide fee, electric-assist bicycle (E-bike) rental fee, helmet rental fee, insurance.

These basic costs are included in the tour price, so you do not need to pay them on-site on the day of the tour.

Not included in the tour price:

Costs for souvenirs purchased along the way, and personal food and drink expenses during free time.

These are the responsibility of the participants. Please bring cash, as some local shops may only accept cash payments.

4. Rainy Weather Policy

As a general rule, the tour will proceed even in light rain. However, it will be canceled if severe weather—such as typhoons or heavy rain—is forecast, making safe cycling difficult.

Decisions regarding cancellation and notifications will generally be made at least 48 hours prior to the event and sent to the registered email address.

5. Other Important Notes

Route: The route features generally gentle elevation changes, so even beginners or those who are not confident in their physical fitness can participate safely on electric-assist bicycles.

Activities at Kobe Rock (Power Spot): During the walk around Kobe Rock, a Tokyo Metropolitan Government-designated Natural Monument, you can admire the natural beauty of the rock formations up close. However, as the terrain includes areas with uneven footing, please follow the guide’s instructions and take care to avoid injury.

Safety Precautions:

Since we will be riding on public roads, please obey traffic rules and ride in single file.

6. Meeting Place & Contact Information Meeting Place:

In front of the ticket gates at Musashi-Itsukaichi Station on the JR Itsukaichi Line (Meet at 10:00 AM)
